Job Description

JOB TITLE: Custodian
FLSA: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Operations
PAY RANGE: Grade 6 starting at $11.56/hour
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director / Deputy Director of Operations

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general supervision is responsible for keeping the City Hall and Annex Buildings in a clean and orderly condition; Work varies little, individual judgment within established standards and procedures is limited.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Physical demands include bending, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 35#s (greater with assistance);
• Work is performed inside and outside of buildings, however is generally controllable; Employee is exposed to cleaning compounds, fumes, chemicals, and occasional outside weather conditions.
• Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
• Cleans and maintains the Municipal Buildings; cleans, dusts, sweeps, vacuums floors and carpets, foyers, chairs, and drapes;
• Mops floors, cleans walls and doors, cleans and disinfects restrooms, monitors supplies, empties trash and garbage containers;
• Picks up trash in and around buildings, and disposes refuse in garbage container to be hauled away;
• Maintains grounds by planting, transplanting, flower beds, etc.
• Operates various equipment related to custodial services including carpet extractors and scrubbing equipment;
• Oversees general building conditions and reports problems to Director of Operations;
• Uses equipment requiring care to assure against breakdown and deterioration;
• Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
• Informs Department Head of activities, supplies used, or needed;
• Is responsible for the proper custodial maintenance of facilities of considerable value requiring care to prevent damage;
• Contacts with fellow employees and the public is frequent requiring common courtesy and respect;
• Work requires the use of proper safety equipment and procedures to prevent exposure to disease or injury.

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: Generally none, may supervise community service workers as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Graduation from high school or its equivalent; PLUS
• One year work experience, preferably janitorial and/or general building maintenance;
• Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and maintain a status of insurability.

EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND EXPECTATIONS:
• Performs routine cleaning and custodial functions including trash removal, restroom cleaning, window and door glass cleaning, dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning of carpets;
• Replaces light bulbs, regulates ventilation and temperature in the assigned buildings;
• May set up rooms for special events;
• May be subject to call-back 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency;
• May be assigned to other buildings and duties as directed;
• Must possess the ability to work independently;
• Locks and unlock doors on City buildings;
• Must possess the ability to follow both written and oral instructions;
• Follows safety practices and procedures;
• Cleans assigned areas on a regular schedule;
• Monitors supplies needed; and
• Performs other duties as assigned.
