City of Shawnee Launches First-Ever Civic Leadership Academy

Shawnee, Oklahoma, April 4, 2024 – The City of Shawnee is excited to announce the launch of its first-ever Civic Leadership Academy, aimed at empowering City Commission candidates and citizens interested in a deeper understanding of municipal operations, challenges, and successes.

Spread across the evening hours of May 9, 16, and 23, the Shawnee Civic Leadership Academy offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively engage with local government processes and initiatives.
The academy’s a wide range of topics will include:

  • Municipal Governance –
    City Manager’s Office
  • Balancing a Budget –
    Finance Department
  • Loving Where You Live –
    Tourism, Expo, Airport, Parks & Recreation,
    and Code Enforcement
  • Developing Shawnee –
    Community Development, Building Permits, and Inspections
  • Responding to Growth –
    Engineering, Public Works, Geographic Information Systems, IT, and Human Resources
  • Keeping the Public Safe –
    Emergency Management, Fire, Police, 911 Dispatch, Animal Control, and Municipal Court
  • Get Involved & What’s Next –
    City Clerk’s Office, Civic Involvement

“We are thrilled to introduce the Civic Leadership Academy as part of the City of Shawnee’s ongoing commitment to fostering government transparency, civic engagement, and community participation,” said Andrea Weckmueller-Behringer, Shawnee City Manager. “This initiative was borne of our belief that citizens and their City can build a vibrant and resilient community together when we operate from a position of shared information and understanding.”

The 3-day Civic Leadership Academy is free of charge and will be open to the first 50 citizens who register. Registration will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, so interested individuals are encouraged to sign up promptly on the Shawnee Civic Leadership Sign-Up to secure their spot!
